Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania, like every state in America, experiences drug trafficking and use amongst a certain portion of their population. It is often up to local law enforcement and drug rehabilitation agencies to deal with the aftermath. The drug enforcement agencies must do what they can to both prevent drugs from getting into the state and then being distributed. Because it is impossible to stop all drugs from entering Pennsylvania, many times, law enforcement is forced to focusing on breaking up already established drug trafficking operations and jailing users.
All of the major drugs can be found in Pennsylvania. Cocaine, crack, heroin, methamphetamines, club drugs, marijuana and prescription drugs are all readily available and poses a problem on some level and amongst certain groups. Heroin, crack, cocaine and marijuana are the most used.
A lot of heroin can be found in Pennsylvania, with large concentrations of the drug in Philadelphia. It is also available and used in both Western and Southern Pennsylvania.
Club drugs are used primarily by younger individuals, including teenagers, college students and those in their early 20’s. People that attend night clubs, go to parties and spend time at raves, are those that use and abuse these types of drugs the most. Ecstasy is the club drug most abused.
Marijuana is a commonly used drug which causes brain damage, memory loss and problems with learning amongst long term users. It is used in large numbers amongst illicit drug users in Pennsylvania. Some of it is brought in from outside Pennsylvania while much of it is grown within the state.
While prescription drug abuse continues to be a problem, there has been a decrease in Oxycontin use in the state. However, hydrocodone and oxycodone drugs continued to be used.
Methamphetamine can be found mostly in Philadelphia. Much of it is manufactured locally and in rural areas throughout the state. It also comes from California and Mexico.
