Alaska acts as a hub for drug distribution throughout the country. Drugs are sold within the state as well. Methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and marijuana are the drugs primarily used in Alaska. Methamphetamine labs were once a big problem however, the state's law enforcement seems to be getting a handle on it. Cocaine and crack cocaine does pose a problem for Alaskan residents most of which is brought in from the 48 contiguous states.
Southeast Asian, Mexican and Colombian heroine is available throughout Alaska and is used by its residents. Methamphetamine is manufactured locally. However, there has been some notable decline in the number of methamphetamine labs and accidents. Club drugs such as ecstasy and also marijuana are used quite a bit. Much of the marijuana is grown locally and indoors. Marijuana is also shipped in from British Columbia.
The use of pharmaceutical drugs continues to be a problem in the United States and the abuse of such drugs is also present in the state of Alaska. The prescription drugs which are most heavily used in Alaska are Oxycodone and Hydrocodone. Steroids are also a problem. While doctor shopping and theft are a popular way for some Alaskans to obtain these drugs, an increasing number of individuals are purchasing them illegally online.
