Steroid Addiction

Date : October 17, 2009, 12:00 am

Many people use steroids to build muscle mass. These individuals may want to develop a muscular physique, compete as body builders, or excel in professional (or even amateur) athletics. Steroid use poses a real danger to the user, both physically and emotionally. Some users suffer from 'roid' rage which causes them to act out aggressively and violently. Some people under the influence of steroids have hurt or killed others. These drugs also have a dangerous affect on those who take them physically.

What:  Those addicted to steroids have become out of control with their use. These individuals take steroids for personal reasons despite the risk involved and are unable or unwilling to stop.

Signs: Those addicted to steroids are not willing to quit even when they are aware of the danger. They may be preoccupied about getting more steroids and become enraged whenever they are not able to. The individual taking them may be out-of-control in their use, be unable to control their urges for the drugs or their use of them.

Cause: Some people become addicted to steroids because they want more strength. They may be able to lift more weight, build greater masses of muscle faster then they could on their own. Those who take it for an athletic advantage may not want to stop using steroids because it would disappear. Looking good is also a hook for many users. They like the way that their bodies look with the drugs and thus are hesitant to give them up. After some time, they may not want to at all.

Effects: Steroids not only affect the physical body but also the mind. Steroid addicts suffer from steroid rage and become not only a threat to themselves but to other people. Steroid use and addiction can also cause heart problems and a host of other physical problems (see complications)

Complications: Individuals that abuse steroids are at risk for developing jaundice, severe acne, tumors, and testicular atrophy, amongst other physical problems. They may also experience retarded growth.
