The Basics
Vicodin is a semi-synthetic opiate. It is made up of a combination of Thebaine and Codeine. Vicodin is a narcotic that helps relieve pain. The abuse of this particular drug, as well as other prescription drugs, has skyrocketed in recent years. It is a major concern for health professionals. Drug rehab facilities are being forced to deal with an increasing number of individuals entering their programs due to addictions to prescription drugs. Vicodin is one of the drugs that is used most.
Because Vicodin is a pain reliever, many individuals became addicted to it after being prescribed the drug by their doctor. For some reason or another they become hooked and continue to take the drug even after they no longer need it.
Those who find themselves with an addiction to Vicodin but with no prescription may be do almost anything to obtain it, even things which are illegal. Many Vicodin addicts will go doctor shopping, which simply means going from one doctor to the next, asking for a prescription for Vicodin. Many times, persons will fake an injury in hopes that they are prescribed the drug. They also may forge prescriptions and steal it. Some drug dealers sell prescription drugs, including Vicodin. This is another way that addicts can obtain it.
The abuse of Vicodin can be very dangerous. The withdrawals can even cause death as can overdosing. There may also be damage to the body in cases of chronic use and when it is taken in high doses. The liver can become damaged which can also lead to death.
