The Basics
Valium is a Benzodiazepine that is prescribed by physicians to help individuals who suffer from anxiety and also to help individuals go through opiate and alcohol withdrawals. They may also be used for insomnia. It also has other uses. Valium may be given in a hospital setting in order to help an individual relax before some type of procedure. Valium can be psychologically addicting because it does help to calm an individual's nerves and because it is effective in treating whatever the ailment it was prescribed for.

The potential for addiction is increased for those who have a history of drug abuse and addiction. Subsequently, while valium may be a great drug for some individuals, it is not for others because of the increased risk of developing an addiction.

The Importance of Valium Treatment

It is very important for those who are interested in treating their addiction to valium to work with a detox center or a medically supervised drug rehabilitation program. This is because getting off of the drug can be dangerous and very uncomfortable. Common withdrawal symptoms for those who stop using valium include tremors, hypertension, psychosis, tachycardia, convulsions and vomiting. Generally those who have been using valium for a long time won't experience withdrawal symptoms right away. I know this is counterintuitive but it is true. Individuals who have only been taking it for a short time often times experience withdrawal symptoms immediately. The worst symptoms are experienced by those who have been using valium for a long time and in high dosages.

Some rehab facilities and detox centers will give addicts benzodiazepine to help lessen the severity of the withdrawal symptoms and also to help them wean off of Valium. This is often time easier on the individual, both physically and psychologically.
