Prescription drugs are readily abused in the United States. In fact, they are the drug of choice for many people. Prescription meds are abused more readily then many well known drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin. It is believed that nearly 20% of individuals in this country abuse prescription medications in some way. This means that they take them without a legitimate reason to do so.
Many prescription drugs are very addicting. Often times, individuals underestimate the power they have to cause addiction because they are prescribed by doctors and thus may be seen as safe. However this doesn't make them any less dangerous. It is possible overdose on prescription medication and they can negatively affect the body just as street drugs can Addictions, no matter what the particular substance is being abused, can destroy a person’s life and negatively affect the lives of those around that person.
Often times, people become consumed about how to obtain the drug and sometimes it is the only thing they think about. This makes it difficult for them to maintain healthy relationships with their family members and friends. Subsequently, both parties often miss out.
The Importance of Prescription Drug Rehab
Because prescription drug abuse is so rampant, drug rehab facilities offer care, support and treatment for individuals with these types of addiction. Some programs may be specifically for individuals addicted to prescription drugs, while others treat a wide variety of addictions. It is extremely important for persons who find themselves addicted to prescription medications, whether it is at the beginning stages of the disease or has gotten quite severe, to seek help. A drug rehab facility can be great for this purpose.
When many people think of prescription drug use, the medications that come to mind most often are often Oxycontin, Ritalin, Xanax and various pain killers. However, steroid abuse is also a big problem, especially amongst young men.
