Methadone Rehabilitation

Date : October 17, 2009, 12:00 am

The Basics
Methadone is an extremely powerful narcotic. It is an opiate and is often used to help individuals wean off of other drugs. Methadone is considered very safe. However, it is possible for individuals to become addicted to it. This is a growing problem.

Methadone induces feelings of euphoria. Individuals may also feel relaxed or drowsy. All of these are very attractive to some users. Subsequently, they begin to use the drug to experience these feelings, sometimes developing an addiction.

Addiction to methadone began to increase in the 1990s. During this time, addiction, abuse and overdosing began to become a problem.

The Importance of Methadone Rehabilitation

At times, individuals who enroll in rehab for drugs besides methadone are often given it so that they can safely and comfortably wean off of the drug they were originally addicted to. Some addicts begin to then replace their original drug of choice with methadone. These individuals begin using methadone recreationally and overtime, develop an addiction to it. Because of this, some drug rehab programs and detox centers use Buprenorphines instead of methadone. Buprenorphine is also a narcotic that helps to lessen withdrawal symptoms, similarly to methadone.

Individuals who find themselves addicted to Methadone should seek help. Drug rehabilitation is a very good option and can be effective in helping individuals overcome their addiction to this very powerful drug.
