Crack is the smokable form of cocaine. People will generally place crack into a pipe and smoke it. It is processed cocaine that induces feelings of euphoria. Users also experience a rush. Though these feelings are intense, they do not last very long. Subsequently, individuals addicted to the drug will continually seek more of it in order to satisfy their cravings and to continue experiencing the highs that crack provides.

Over the past 25 years, crack cocaine has become a major problem, especially in the inner cities and low income areas throughout the United States. An addiction to crack cocaine can be absolutely devastating. Individuals may no longer be concerned about taking care of themselves. They may often times forgo eating and thus may lose weight. They are also often unable to take care of their families.

The Importance of Crack Rehab Program

The longer a person is addicted to crack, the harder it is for them to quit. Therefore, it is very important for addicts to enroll in some sort of rehab program. It is very hard to stop using on one's own and individuals will often need professional help.

The physical dangers of using crack include arrhythmia, hypertension and myocardial infarction which are all cardiovascular ailments. An addict's tooth enamel may erode and they may have seizures and headaches. Damage to the lungs may also occur as well as renal failure, and miscarriage. HIV, Hepatitis B or C are also risks due to addicts sharing needles. There are also many psychological and social problems that can occur when a person is addicted to crack.

Medical detox is not generally recommended for those addicted to crack cocaine. However, rehabilitation is. There are currently no recommended medications prescribed for crack addicts. Typically, individuals receive some type of counseling and / or cognitive behavioral therapy.
