Cocaine Rehabilitation

Date : October 17, 2009, 12:00 am

The Basics
Cocaine is a very powerful and addicting stimulant. Cocaine's "heydey' in the United States occurred during the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, though its use continues quite heavily today. It is still one of the most abused drugs in the U.S.

Cocaine has been around for some time. It is one of the oldest drugs in existence and is taken from the cocoa plant. The plant's leaves have been consumed for thousands of years for their stimulating and euphoric effects. The actual chemical, cocaine hydrochloride, hasn't been around as long, only for about 100 years.

At one time, many people mistakenly believed that cocaine was basically harmless. It was a hugely popular party drug (and continues to be for some individuals), especially in the 1980s and 1990s. Because cocaine is a stimulant, it allows individuals to go without sleep much longer then they normally would be able to. Subsequently, it was and still is, used by some people specifically for this purpose. Sometimes students and individuals in certain occupations use it to stay awake.

Why Cocaine Rehabilitation Is Important

It has since been proven that cocaine is in fact very harmful. Not only is it addicting but it also physically dangerous. Individuals are at risk for dying from an overdose. Long-term use can cause a number of various ailments, including but not limited to heart disease, problems with the liver and heart failure.

Cocaine can also be damaging financially. Once a person becomes addicted much of their money begins to go towards supporting their habit. Often times, individuals will buy cocaine and forgo spending money on the essentials, such as shelter, clothing and food.

Because of this and the physical risks associated with cocaine addiction, it is very important that individuals get help. Drug rehabilitation is often the best option for individuals who find themselves or a loved one addicted to cocaine.
