Shopping Addiction

Date : October 17, 2009, 12:00 am

A shopping addiction can be very expensive. This particular vice will cost individuals a lot of money. Persons with this sort of addiction are unable to stop themselves from making purchases even when they know that they shouldn't. Addicts might buy food, clothing, collectables or a host of other things. What they buy is not important. It is the uncontrolled compulsion to buy that makes them a shopping addict. Individuals with a shopping addiction often have money troubles and depending on their income, may be in deep debt.

What Is A Shopping Addiction: A person with a shopping addiction will feel a strong compulsion to shop, even when doing so is not practical financially. Such individuals may rack up huge debt in order to shop as they wish. They may not feel fulfilled or happy unless they have made a purchase.

Shopping can fill the void in some people that drugs and alcohol does for others. It can also be similarly damaging. This type of addiction can cause families to break up, often over fights that concern money and the addict's behavior. An individual can find them selves alone, deep in debt and even forced to file bankruptcy.

Signs of A Shopping Addiction: The signs of a shopping addiction may or may not be obvious. Some people will hide their purchases from loved ones and attempt to cover their tracks so that other individuals do not know that they have a problem. Addicts will likely have money problems, may be unable to pay their bills and may have to borrow or use debt in order to finance their addiction.

Causes of A shopping Addiction: A shopping addiction may be caused by low self esteem. A person may feel bad about them selves and seek to compensate by spending money. Social pressure might also lead to a shopping addiction. In order to keep up with the possessions (quality and number) of someone else, a person may spend a lot of money.

Shopping becomes a way to self medicate for some. Instead of using drugs or drinking alcohol, they might go shopping to improve their mood or soothe hurt feelings.

Other people are compulsive or feel entitled to nice things. In cases of the former, these people are unable to control themselves. People who feel entitled will buy things even when they can't afford to because they feel like they deserve them.

Effects of A Shopping Addiction: Individuals with a shopping addiction will often find themselves in financial trouble. They may have a great deal of credit card debt or find themselves behind on their mortgage or vehicle payments because the money set aside for those has been used to go shopping. Foreclosure and even bankruptcy can be the result of a severe shopping addiction.

Complications of A Shopping Addiction: Financial trouble can cause fractured relationships, and is the complication most associated with a shopping addiction.

Rehab and Recovery: Though shopping, like other addictions are difficult to break, it is possible to do so. Many people are able to overcome their addiction and go back to a normal, financially responsible life. Counseling and support groups might be effective in treating this particular addiction.
