Sex addiction has become more common in the last decade or two, or at least, openly discussed. Persons with this addiction have trouble controlling themselves sexually and are unable to say no to sex even when not doing so can be dangerous to their bodies and their current relationships.
What Is A Sex Addiction?: A sex addiction involves persons becoming consumed with sex. This might include the actual act, masturbation, paying for the services of prostitutes and constantly thinking about sex. Some people will get involved in a ton of sexual experiences while others might begin to act out or consider and engage in more deviant behaviors.
Signs of A Sex Addiction: The signs of sex addiction can sometimes be difficult to decipher because how much a person thinks about sex may or may not be indicative of whether a person is a sex addict. Just because a person thinks about sex a lot does not mean that they are an addict. However, if a person becomes consumed with thoughts of sex and is unable to function normally, this might be a sign.
Having a great deal of sex even when there are significant risks involved, may be a result of sex addiction. Sex addicts may have sex with prostitutes, visit strip clubs a lot, masturbate a great deal and watch pornography. Sex and thoughts of it rules their minds and lives.
Causes of A Sex Addiction: A person may suffer a sex addiction for a number of reasons. They may have experienced abuse, been hurt emotionally or simply enjoy sex. The specific reasons differ based on the addict themselves.
Effects of A Sexual Addiction: A sexual addiction can cause relational problems and put the addict at risk (and those they have sex with) for sexually transmitted diseases. Romantic relationships can fall apart due to infidelity. This may lead to break ups and divorce. Sexual disease can easily be spread from one partner to another and even lead to death if a person is exposed to Hepatitis or HIV.
Complications of A Sex Addiction: Complications of sexual addiction include sexually transmitted infections, death and relationship failure.
Rehab and Recovery: It is possible to recover from sexual addiction. Counseling, support groups and religious study are all options that have the potential of being successful. Depending on the individual and the circumstances surrounding their addiction, the recovery process could happen quickly or take a long time. Some people will struggle with this addiction their entire life, much like an alcohol and/or drug addiction.
